Frank William Abagnale Jr. was born in the Bronx, New York City, on April 27, 1948.
At 16 years old, he began his criminal career by forging checks. Living a life of luxury, he posed as an airline pilot, doctor, and lawyer, cashing fraudulent checks worth millions of dollars.
As his crimes continued to escalate, he soon caught the attention of the FBI. Frank's daring escape from jail occurred in 1971 after being apprehended by French police in Montpellier. While awaiting extradition to the USA, he hatched an elaborate plan. Posing as an undercover prison inspector, he convinced the guards he needed assistance to conduct a ‘practice’ escape. During the escape, Frank overpowered a prison guard, stole his uniform, and walked out of the jail, leaving the authorities unaware of his identity. He boarded a flight to Sweden and continued his life on the run. His getaway further elevated his notoriety, making him one of the most wanted criminals in the world!
In 1974, he was finally captured in France and extradited to the USA, where he served 4 years in an Atlanta prison.
