THE STORY OF GOOD MARIA ($60,000 – $80,000)

Maria Swanenburg was born September 9, 1839, in Leiden, Netherlands.

She earned the nickname ‘Good Maria’ because of her eagerness to help friends and family in her poverty-stricken neighbourhood.

What no one knew was, for the better part of 20 years, she is believed to have poisoned at least 65 people, by adding arsenic to their food or drink. Among her first victims – her very own mother and father!

In December 1883, Good Maria was arrested on the suspicion of poisoning the Frankhuizen family. She was eventually found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in jail – where she died in 1915.

That said, while you’re here, Mate Pavkovic’s client is a prominent Canadian business law firm providing strategic legal and business advice in all areas of business law. They’re located in the heart of Toronto’s financial district and looking for a Legal Assistant (General Litigation).

POSITION: LEGAL ASSISTANT (GENERAL LITIGATION) LOCATION: TORONTO INDUSTRY: LEGAL SERVICES

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assist in preparation + completion of various commercial and employment litigation documentation, including, motion records, pleadings (Superior Court, Court of Appeal, Small Claims Court, and Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario), notices, affidavits, affidavits of documents, bill of costs, cost outlines, writs of seizure and sale, correspondence.

· Support the preparation of employee handbooks, offers of employment, and termination notices.

· Communicate with internal & external clients, as well as court and tribunal offices and opposing counsel(s).

· Handle administrative details with respect to accounting, opening and closing files, docketing, billing, etc.

· Calendar management including scheduling of meetings.

· Ability to be flexible to pivot and adjust to the changing demands of the job + produce quality work.

REQUIREMENTS

· 5+ years’ Litigation legal experience.

· Previous experience with Caselines.

· Successful completion of a post-secondary level legal assistant or law clerk course.

· Superior knowledge of various courts and the Rules of Civil Procedure.

REMUNERATION SALARY RANGE: $60,000 – $80,000 OTHER: benefits + vacation + professional & wellness programs
