THE TWINKIE DEFENSE ($155,000 – $180,000)

The ‘Twinkie Defense’ case involved the trial of Dan White, a former San Francisco city supervisor, who was charged with the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1979. White's defense team argued that his mental state was impaired due to depression and diminished capacity caused by his excessive consumption of junk food, including Twinkies!

The defense did not solely rely on the consumption of Twinkies as the ‘excuse’ for White's actions but presented evidence of his mental state and behavioural changes. The term ‘Twinkie Defense’ became popular in the media, leading to debates about the use of such defenses in legal proceedings.

The case resulted in White being found guilty of voluntary manslaughter instead of murder, causing public outrage. The ‘Twinkie Defense’ case remains significant in discussions about mental health, legal defenses, and the wider impact of high-profile trials on society.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Contract Disputes

· Construction Issues and Disputes

· Insolvency, Restructuring, and Security Enforcement

· Shareholder Disputes and Claims

· Commercial Lease Disputes and Enforcement

· Product Liability Claims

· Commercial Litigation and Contract Enforcement

· Construction Litigation, Bond Claims, and Builders Lien Claims

· Mediation and Arbitration

REQUIREMENTS

· Good-standing member of the Law Society of Alberta or a member of another Canadian Law Society and eligible for admission to the Law Society of Alberta.

· Carry out all aspects of litigation files and tasks, including in relation to pleadings, legal research, record production, questioning for discovery, and court appearances.

· Engage in written and oral advocacy in court, arbitration, and administrative proceedings.

· Time management skills including ability to balance competing demands and time-sensitive tasks.

· Self-motivated to aim for a work product that exceeds expectations.

· Commitment to the highest level of client service and professionalism.

· Strong work ethic & interpersonal skills.

REMUNERATION SALARY RANGE: $155,000 – $180,000 OTHER: benefits + life insurance + on-site gym + parking subsidy + RRSPs + vacation
