The third of seven children, Albert Ernest Clifford Young was born February 8, 1922. He was raised on the family farm, which consisted of 2,000 acres and 2,000 sheep. As the family was quite poor, they couldn’t afford horses, so a young Cliff would round up the sheep – on foot. In 1983, at the age of 61, Cliff shuffled to the starting line of the famous Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon! The total distance of the race – a staggering 875km!
Cliff stood there, dressed in overalls and his first-ever pair of running shoes … while scores of muscular, twenty-somethings stretched and snickered about the stranger among them.
When the starter’s pistol fired, his competitors instantly left him in their dust. Cliff, removed his dentures, placed them in his pocket and started his unorthodox shuffle towards Melbourne.
At the time, the widely accepted approach to ultramarathon racing was to alternate between running for 18 hours and sleeping for 6.
Thing is, no one informed Cliff he should take scheduled breaks to get some sleep. So, the potato farmer from Beech Forest, Victoria just kept running and running and running!
In fact, on a diet consisting of only hot chocolate and water … Cliff ran for 5 & ½ days – straight!
And to everyone’s surprise, he crossed the finish line in first place!
He finished the race 10 hours before the second-place finisher … and 12 hours faster than anyone had before.
