$77 LIE | $205,000 – $280,000 (USD)

In 2008, an Australian man named Marcus Einfeld, a former judge of the Federal Court, received a $77 speeding ticket. Rather than simply pay the fine, he insisted he wasn’t driving. He claimed a friend from overseas, Teresa Brennan, had borrowed his car that day.

There was just one 'small' problem: Teresa Brennan had died three years earlier! To support his lie, Einfeld submitted a sworn affidavit, insisted on his innocence in interviews, and doubled down in court. Investigators began digging.

What started as a minor traffic violation quickly unraveled into something much bigger. It was discovered that Einfeld had fabricated evidence and lied under oath. By the time the dust settled, the speeding ticket had spiraled into multiple charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Einfeld was sentenced to two years in prison – not for speeding, but for spinning a lie so elaborate that it destroyed his decades-long legal career. All to avoid a $77 fine!
