In the murky kitchens of 13th-century England, rumors churned about a band of bakers who were cheating their customers. They were selling loaves that were deliberately undersized yet overpriced. When word of this deception reached King Henry III, he grew furious. Determined to crush the fraud, he ordered a new law, demanding steep fines and even public flogging for any baker caught in the act.
Many bakers, armed only with rudimentary tools and no scales, found it nearly impossible to ensure every loaf was perfectly measured. In order to avoid the king’s wrath, they began the practice of slipping one extra loaf into every dozen they sold. And this is how the “Baker’s Dozen” was born!
