In 2013, James Howells, an IT worker from Newport, Wales, accidentally threw away a hard drive during a routine cleanup. But this wasn’t just any hard drive – it contained the private keys to 8,000 bitcoins he had mined back in 2009, when the cryptocurrency was still in its infancy and practically worthless.
Realizing his mistake, James traced the hard drive’s likely location to a massive local landfill. He put together a detailed excavation plan, backed by private investors, environmental experts, and data recovery specialists. He even offered the city millions in return for permission to dig.
But the Newport City Council repeatedly refused, citing environmental concerns, legal risks, and the low odds of retrieving usable data from a drive buried under years of compacted waste.
To this day, the drive remains buried somewhere in that landfill.
As for the value of those lost bitcoins? As of today, they’d be worth approximately $750 million US dollars. What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Absolutely nothing.
