Barings Bank was one of the oldest and most respected banks in England, founded in 1762 and famously used by the royal family. For over two centuries, it was seen as rock-solid.

That changed in 1995, when a single trader, Nick Leeson, brought it down. Based in Singapore, Leeson was supposed to make safe trades. Instead, he started hiding losses in a secret account and taking bigger and bigger risks. At first, his bets made money, but when they turned bad, he tried to recover by gambling even more.

His biggest mistake came after the Kobe earthquake in Japan. Leeson bet heavily that the Japanese stock market would rebound. Instead, it plunged further, creating losses of £827 million – more than Barings’ entire capital.

Within days, the 233-year-old institution was insolvent. Barings was sold to ING, a Dutch bank, for just £1. Leeson was later arrested, sentenced to prison, and became a symbol of reckless risk-taking.
