I’LL BRING THE POT ($180,000 – $190,000+)

In 1981, my Grade 4 teacher, Mrs. Verticchio announced our class would be baking Rice Krispie Squares.

Our entire class was whipped into a frenzy – and no one more so than me!

Mrs. Verticchio explained that each student would need to contribute.

And that’s when my enthusiasm shifted to grave concern.

The son of Croatian immigrant parents, I dreaded the idea of asking them for anything that cost money.

As Mrs. Verticchio called out the ingredients, I shrunk into my chair as my classmates eagerly volunteered. Boxes of Rice Krispies, bags of marshmallows, sticks of butter, sugar – there was absolutely no chance I was raising my hand for any of those – too much money! And then, Mrs. Verticchio said we’d also need pots and baking sheets.

A wave of relief washed over me as I thought, “we have tons of pots at home, and it won’t cost us a penny”!

I was so thrilled, I took the opportunity to flex a little … and volunteered to bring two pots – not just one! That night at the dinner table … proud as a peacock, I gloated to my parents what a genius their son was. As I recounted the day’s events, my mama’s reaction was far from impressed – in fact, quite the opposite!

Frustrated, she explained our kitchen pots weren’t exactly aesthetically pleasing, and she’d rather I drop out than allow me to bring unsightly kitchenware to school.

Long story short, mama had to go to Zellers and buy 2 new pots we didn’t need. In retrospect, I guess I should have volunteered for the bag of marshmallows!
