In 1928, Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming made a discovery that would change the world forever – and he didn’t even mean to. One seemingly mundane day, he left a petri dish of bacteria uncovered. It was a small mistake, something most scientists wouldn’t think twice about. But when he returned to the dish days later, what he saw stunned him: mold had grown in the dish, and the bacteria around it were dead.

At first, it seemed like an oddity, an experiment gone wrong. But as he examined it more closely, he realized that the mold had killed the bacteria, and it wasn’t just random contamination. The mold was doing something no one had ever seen before. This accidental discovery led to the development of penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic, which would go on to save millions of lives.
