PAUL BUNYAN ($65,000 – $75,000)

On August 18, 1976, in the Joint Security Area of the Korean Demilitarized Zone – a tense, heavily fortified strip of land separating North and South Korea – a routine maintenance task turned deadly. A small U.S. Army work crew went to trim a large poplar tree that blocked sightlines between checkpoints, a routine task in one of the most watched pieces of real estate in the world.North Korean soldiers confronted the group, and in the confrontation, two U.S. officers were killed.

Three days later, the U.S. and South Korea responded with overwhelming force. Hundreds of troops moved into position, supported by attack helicopters overhead, fighter jets flying escort, B-52 bombers on standby, artillery units ready, and special operations forces on alert. Every element of military power was present, yet the goal was simple: remove a tree.Engineers advanced with chainsaws, and in a few minutes … the poplar was gone.

The operation, known as Operation Paul Bunyan, became one of the most extraordinary displays of controlled military strength in Cold War history – a calculated, overwhelming show of force executed entirely to cut down a single tree!
