The third of 14 children … ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger was born August 23, 1948, in Joliet, Illinois. Unknowingly, Rudy suffered from dyslexia and didn’t excel scholastically. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy and served for two years, before returning to work at a power plant. Rudy applied to Notre Dame but was rejected due to low grades.
A determined young man, he enrolled at Holy Cross College and on his fourth attempt, finally gained admission to Notre Dame!
Standing 5’6” and weighing 165 pounds, Rudy was considered undersized to play for the team, but he managed to earn a ‘spot’ on Notre Dame’s scout team – which helps the varsity team in practices.
On November 8, 1975, head coach, Dan Devine agreed to allow Rudy to dress with the team for the final home game of his senior season versus Georgia Tech. In the dying minutes of the 4th quarter, Rudy’s name was called. And, in the game’s final play, Rudy sacked the Georgia Tech quarterback! Overjoyed, his teammates carried him off the field, making him the first player in Notre Dame history to receive such an honour. What does that have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Nothing.
