Clark Stanley was born in 1854 in Abilene, Texas. After a decade as a cowboy, he claimed to have spent two years apprenticing with a Hopi medicine man in Arizona, where he was introduced to the healing powers of snake oil.

By the 1890s, Stanley had reinvented himself as a traveling showman, pitching his own Snake Oil Liniment across the American Southwest. Crowds gathered as he killed live rattlesnakes onstage, boiled them down, and bottled the “medicine” on the spot. At 50 cents a bottle (about $20 today), his miracle cure sold fast.

He claimed it treated everything from headaches to arthritis to sciatica. Nicknamed The Rattlesnake King, Stanley expanded his operation, opening production facilities as far away as Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

But in 1917, federal agents seized a shipment of his liniment and tested it.

No snake oil. Just mineral oil, beef fat, red pepper, and turpentine.

Clark Stanley, The Rattlesnake King, had never sold snake oil at all. What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Absolutely nothing.
