SWEET KISS OF DEATH ($67,000+)

Frank Hayes was born in Ireland before moving to America, where he worked as a horse trainer and stableman in New York.
Â
On June 3, 1923, he was called in last-minute as a stand-in jockey for a race at Belmont Park the following day. His mount was a horse named ‘Sweet Kiss’, a 20–1 outsider. To ‘make weight’, Hayes had to drop 12 pounds in just 24 hours.
Â
With no real racing experience and no wins to his name, expectations were low. Determined to qualify, he spent hours running and exercising, refusing food and water in an extreme attempt to cut weight.
Â
By race day, even though he was severely weakened, Hayes still managed to get into the saddle and start the race.
Â
Against all odds, Sweet Kiss crossed the finish line first.
Â
Only afterward did the horrifying truth emerge: Hayes had suffered a fatal heart attack mid-race. Remarkably, his body remained upright in the saddle all the way to victory, unnoticed until the race had ended.
