In September of 2023, a Jetstar flight bound from Perth, Australia was forced to perform an emergency landing due to the actions of an unruly passenger. The man, who had been drinking and acting disruptively, ignored safety instructions and created such chaos that the captain decided to return the plane to the Perth airport. To ensure the flight’s safe landing, the crew was forced to dump a significant amount of fuel.

When the flight touched down, the man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

In court, he accepted responsibility and plead guilty – in order to avoid prison time.Yet, his troubles didn’t end there. On top of an $8,000 fine for his behavior, the court ordered him to pay an additional $5,500 to cover the cost of the wasted fuel that had been dumped mid-flight.

SUMMARY: Our client, a well-established litigation firm in Ottawa is looking for an experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in civil litigation and a dedication to providing excellent legal service to clients. This is a great opportunity for a motivated legal professional to contribute to a top practice in the field.

POSITION:    CIVIL LITIGATION LAWYER INDUSTRY:   LEGAL

LOCATION:  OTTAWA, ONTARIO (3 DAYS WFH FLEX) RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Represent clients in civil litigation matters, including pre-trial, trial, and post-trial proceedings.

·       Conduct legal research and prepare detailed legal documents, including pleadings, motions & briefs.

·       Develop case strategies and provide legal advice to clients regarding their options and potential outcomes.

·       Negotiate settlements on behalf of clients to achieve favorable resolutions.

·       Attend court hearings, trials, and mediations, presenting evidence and arguments effectively.

·       Manage a caseload efficiently, ensuring compliance with deadlines and court rules.

·       Collaborate with clients, witnesses, and experts to gather information and prepare for cases.

·       Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and legal trends in civil litigation.

·       Engage in business development activities to enhance the firm’s client base and market presence.

·       Provide mentorship and support to junior lawyers and legal staff as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

·       High degree of professional ethics and integrity.

·       Ability to be both a self-starter and team player.

·       Engaged in business development.

·       Excellent technical skills.

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills.

·       Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

·       Must be a member of the Ontario Bar in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.

REMUNERATION:

SALARY RANGE: $135,000 – $180,000
