THE CLOCK ($92,000 – $126,500)

In 1707, a British naval fleet was off by just a few miles – and sailed straight into the rocks. Over a thousand sailors drowned before sunrise, because nobody on board could answer one question: where are we?

The problem was longitude. It required a clock accurate enough to survive a pitching ship … and no such clock existed. So, Britain offered a prize (worth millions today) to whoever could build one.

Every credentialed scientist in Europe bet on the stars instead – complicated astronomy, the establishment's answer.

Then a carpenter showed up. No degree, no observatory. Just a workbench.

John Harrison spent over 40 years building clocks, funded on tradesman's wages, while actual astronomers dismissed him as a hobbyist. His fourth attempt lost just five seconds over an 81-day Atlantic crossing.

The Board of Longitude (run by the same astronomers he'd just made obsolete) refused to believe it.They stalled him for over a decade.

Harrison, in his seventies, finally went over their heads to King George III. The king intervened. Parliament paid up. Every ship that's ever crossed an ocean and known exactly where it was ... has one stubborn carpenter to thank.
