THE KNOCKER-UPPER ($180,000 - $300,000+)

In 18th century Britain, the sound of an alarm clock was a rare, unreliable thing. Expensive too, beyond the reach of most working folk. But there was no choice; people had to wake up on time! So, what did they do? They turned to the “knocker-upper.” Armed with nothing but a long wooden baton, the knocker-upper would walk the shadowed streets, knocking on doors, waking those still lost in slumber. But the real challenge came for those on higher floors. For them, the knocker-upper carried a long bamboo stick – capable of reaching windows, tapping, rapping, until they could be sure their client was stirring.
The “knocker-upper” wouldn’t leave until they were certain their client had climbed out of bed.
In return, the knocker-up was paid a few pence per week.
