THE TWINKIE DEFENSE ($120,000 – $180,000+)

The ‘Twinkie Defense’ case involved the trial of Dan White, a former San Francisco city supervisor, who was charged with the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1979. White's defense team argued that his mental state was impaired due to depression and diminished capacity caused by his excessive consumption of junk food, including Twinkies!

The defense did not solely rely on the consumption of Twinkies as the ‘excuse’ for White's actions but presented evidence of his mental state and behavioural changes. The term ‘Twinkie Defense’ became popular in the media, leading to debates about the use of such defenses in legal proceedings.

The case resulted in White being found guilty of voluntary manslaughter instead of murder, causing public outrage. The ‘Twinkie Defense’ case remains significant in discussions about mental health, legal defenses, and the wider impact of high-profile trials on society.

But, while you’re here, Mate Pavkovic’s legal client, a well-established full-service litigation firm in downtown Vancouver, is seeking an Estate Litigation Lawyer to join its growing team.

POSITION:         ESTATE LITIGATION LAWYER LOCATION:       VANCOUVER INDUSTRY:        LEGAL SERVICES

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Conduct legal research, analysis, and draft pleadings, motions, and other legal documents

·         Manage a full caseload of estate litigation files from initiation through resolution

·         Collaborate with clients and internal teams to develop effective case strategies

·         Provide exceptional client service and maintain strong client relationships

·         Contribute to the firm’s growth and uphold its reputation for excellence

·         Work closely with other lawyers and staff in a team-oriented environment

REQUIREMENTS

·         Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

·         Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia

·         4+ years of litigation experience (estate litigation experience preferred)

·         Strong advocacy, analytical, and research skills

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·         Ability to manage files independently and meet deadlines

·         High level of professionalism and integrity
