In the 1920s, a college student named Theodor Geisel was studying at Dartmouth, where he became editor of the school’s humor magazine. But during Prohibition, he and his friends were caught drinking gin. As punishment, the school banned him from contributing to the magazine.
But Geisel wasn’t ready to give up. He found a clever workaround: he continued submitting work … just under a different name. This little act of rebellion would go on to shape literary history.
Years later, when he began publishing children’s books, he revived that old pen name – partly as a nod to his mother’s maiden name, partly as an inside joke to honour his father’s dream that he’d become a doctor.
He never earned a doctorate. But that didn’t matter.
Because the name he chose, the one born out of a college punishment, family pride, and a little bit of mischief, was the one the whole world would come to know and love: Dr. Seuss! What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role?
Not a single thing!
